Installation Recommendation
- Disconnect Battery Before Work: Always isolate the battery and wait the manufacturer recommended time to discharge capacitors before removing the airbag to avoid injury.
- Airbag Removal: If the steering wheel contains an airbag, remove the airbag module carefully and store it facing upward on a stable surface.
- Mark Steering Position: Mark the relationship between the steering wheel and steering column (spline alignment) before removal to ensure correct reinstallation and wheel alignment.
- Use Proper Tools: Remove the center retaining nut and use a steering wheel puller if needed. Do not apply excessive force that could damage the steering column or wheel hub.
- Check Clock Spring And Electrical Connectors: Inspect the clockspring (spiral cable) and connectors for wear or damage. Replace or re-center the clockspring as required to restore horn and switch functions.
- Tightening And Final Checks: Refit the wheel in the marked position and torque the retaining nut to the manufacturer specification. Reconnect the battery and verify functionality of horn, steering wheel controls and airbag indicator.
- Professional Support: If you are not familiar with airbag handling or steering column work, have installation performed by a qualified technician.
Reason For Common Failure
- Cosmetic Wear: Frequent use leads to worn leather/vinyl or degraded surface material, especially on high-mileage vehicles.
- Accident Damage: Impact or airbag deployment commonly requires steering wheel replacement due to deformation or safety concerns.
- Electrical Faults: Buttons and switch contacts can fail over time; connectors and ribbon (clockspring) wear may cause loss of horn or control functions.
